Plan International shares ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign will support four million girls to get the education, skills and support they need to move themselves from poverty to opportunity.
"There's a 'Bike Ride for Girls' Rights event at Marikina, Jo would you like to go?" my sister, Ate Lour, asks me.
Registration for the Bike Ride! |
I thought, I'll bring my roller blades instead. Bikes don't love me for I lose balance every time. So last Sunday, I got up at 4am, readied my pair of blades and camera to witness the 6am bike ride at my hometown. I love this city so much! Now, I feel a mix of melancholy and excitement run in my veins. :)
waiting for the program to start! :) |
That morning, all I knew is that this was a global campaign for girls' rights, and me and my supportive boyfriend, are in!
"Plan International was the first major organization to call for an international day of recognition for girls and achieving it was one of the earliest goals of the campaign. Plan International’s 'Because I am a Girl' campaign launches globally on the first ever International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, 2012.

We will celebrate this important day with inspirational displays and activities across the globe including events at the Empire State Building in New York and the iconic London Eye on the Southbank. Forums will be held with policy makers, government officials and business leaders. Girls' voices will be heard and their ideas shared. Around the world, people from all walks of life will be asked to raise their hand in support of the campaign."

GAME! Let's RAISE a HAND to help!
‘Because I Am A Girl’ campaign is calling for:
- Girls' education to be prioritized by world leaders
- Girls' completion of a quality secondary education to be a major focus of international action
- Funding for girls education to be increased
- An end to child marriage
- An end to gender-based violence in and around schools
- Girls and boys to participate in decision making and inspire those with power to take action
Ms. Carin van der Hor of Plan International, from Rotterdam, Netherlands, and her daughter welcome cyclists with a short speech. Route was also briefly discussed. |
Plan International shares 'Globally, one in three girls around the world is denied an education by the daily realities of poverty, discrimination and violence. Every day, young girls are missing out on an education, forced into marriage and subjected to violence.
Ready to start the Bike Ride! Girls from different schools are here to stand for their rights! |
That equates to some 75 million girls out of education globally. Not only is this unjust. It’s also a huge waste of potential with serious global consequences. Supporting girls’ education is one of the single best investments we can make to help end poverty.
Why?
Bike testing! :-) |
- A girl who has completed her education is less likely to experience violence or marry and have children while she is still a child herself.
- A girl who has completed her education is more likely to be literate, healthy and survive into adulthood, as are her children.
- A girl who has completed her education is more likely to reinvest her income back into her family, community and country.
- A girl who has completed her education is more likely to understand her rights and be a force for change.
This Bike Ride shows that we, Filipinos, fight for girls' rights! And even if we were not able to join (yes, I didn't think I could handle rollerblading for a 12km route! Oh nooo! I'm sorry) a hand is still powerful!
Just like what Plan International says "Help save lives and transform futures, release the real potential of girls and their communities! Make this world a place where girls can be safe, a space where they can be what they want to be without being judged."
